The world of wine, very masculine, is changing. From now on, women are more present in this sector. What about equality between men and women when it comes to wine?…
We regularly hear people say "this wine is really a wine of chicks" or "this one is powerful., it is a real man's wine ", but can we really make such a judgment ? It's time to separate the true from the false.
Women prefer white wine
Propaganda. This is perhaps the most persistent misconception.
In 2011, the Vinexpo fair carried out a major study on female preferences. In all, 10500 women were interviewed in 5 pays : France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States and Hong Kong. She brushes aside the eccentric idea that women prefer white wine. A large majority of them prefer red wine (51,1 %) while only 26,4 % of them prefer white and 15,7 % are fans of rosé. However, the received idea could become reality in the future since the preference for red wine has waned from 15 % compared to 2009.
Another study conducted in 2013 by My VitiBox confirms the results of the previous survey and compares it to men. Whether men or women, the preference is red for 57 % of them, while only 24 % oenofilles prefer white and 27 % men. The general preference is therefore for red wine and even better, white wine is more a man's story than a woman's - no offense to the most macho —.
Still according to the study by My VitiBox, there is still a little subtlety about the preference for red wine. Wines with supple tannins - we must understand here more discreet tannins - are preferred by 48 % women against 43 % men.
Women prefer light red wine
Propaganda
We have just discovered that women like red wines with soft tannins. We could therefore deduce without asking too many questions that they love light wines. — but it is also well known that they do not know what they want —
Again according to My VitiBox, 40 % of women prefer Bordeaux wines and only 25 % Burgundies. A feminine wine is therefore very close to a masculine wine. : a red wine from Bordeaux, fruity, slightly oaked and with rather supple tannins. Only distinction, 63 % of women prefer wines that are lighter in alcohol than men (43 %). It is not to understand anything… Women want to drink Bordeaux, but they want it low in tannins and low in alcohol - like a Burgundy —, which leads to the following idea.
Women don't know much about wine
Info… but above all a beautiful intox
A slim majority of women surveyed (58 %) declares to know it as well as men. But behind this result lies another truth : 42 % of women think they know less about it than men. But if we had asked the same group if they knew how to change a wheel or if they knew how to tinker, would the answers have been different ?
Above all, this testifies to a greater self-confidence or at least a duty of self-assurance on the part of men.. Women have long been kept away from vinous pleasures. Perhaps these results come from the greater ease of men in analyzing wine ?
Women are bad at wine
Propaganda
The National Center for Biotechnology Information Search database proves the opposite. Indeed, women have a better ability to memorize smells even when concentration decreases. The sense of smell of women is also capable of being 10 times more efficient when they have their period - like a werewolf or a vampire, for the machos who read this article —.
It is important to have a finish
You really thought I was going to write a sexist article demonstrating the superiority of men over women in the wine business ? Yet, wine marketing persists in promoting wines for women using well-established stereotypes like this rosé declined in 4 moods : radiant, seductive, fresh and shiny… If you are in a "hot" mood, it is advisable to "take out the vertiginous stilettos, add some sparkles to your eyes and undo the last button of your blouse before sharing your bottle with your girlfriends ». Who does not care ?
