The classification of 1855 is the best known and oldest closely linked to the history of the Bordeaux vineyard. In this year, Bordeaux wine trade and industry created this classification on the occasion of the Paris Universal Exhibition and at the request of Napoleon III.

The estates were classified according to the reputation of the châteaux and the estimated value of the wines produced.. They were thus classified from first to fifth cru.

Besides the Château Haut-Brion which is in the Graves, the red wines come from the Médoc. At the time less present, the white wines come from the Sauternes and Barsac appellations. These are therefore sweet wines from the Graves that were entered in a classification at two levels.

Although today criticized, this classification remains a reference and a master stallion in the world of wine. It has hardly moved since its creation. He only knew two modifications. The first one, in September 1855, added Château Cantemerle in the Fifth Classified Growth category. The second, in 1973, upgraded Château Mouton-Rothschild from Second to Premier Cru Classé.

We find in this classification 88 Châteaux. For red wines, 61 domains are classified into 5 crus levels. As for the whites, 27 domains are organized into three levels.

The Graves classification

Established in 1953 by INAO (National Institute of Designations of Origin) at the request of the Graves appellation, the classification of Graves wines distinguishes both red and white wines, and groups 16 different castles. This classification has been slightly modified in 1959, but has never been changed since, and all the wines are classified at the same level.

All of these châteaux are now in the Pessac-Léognan AOC area. 7 châteaux are classified on both their red and white wines : Chateau Bouscaut, Chateau Carbonnieux, knight's domain, Chateau La Tour Haut-Brion, Chateau La Tour-Martillac, Château Malartic Lagravière and Château Olivier.

The classification of Saint-Emilion

Following a request from the Saint-Emilion appellation defense union in 1954, l'INAO – understand the National Institute of Designations of Origin – creates a classification of AOC wines. All 10 years, this classification is revisited. The last ranking was made and published in September 2012.

The classification of Crus Bourgeois

The classification of Crus Bourgeois is a distinction offered to Bordeaux wines and specifically to those of Médoc since 1932. It helps to enhance the quality of wines that cannot qualify for the classification of Grands Crus Classés of 1855.
