Located in the heart of Paris, Les Caves du Louvre is a unique space entirely dedicated to wine and viticulture !
Wednesday 21 October 2015 the museum was inaugurated The Louvre Cellars, located in the heart of Paris, the opportunity for me to discover this space dedicated to wine. In the 18th century, this private mansion belonged to Trudon, Louis XV sommelier and wax maker. Today, it is almost obvious that a wine museum finds its place in the 800 m² of cellars in this listed building.
An innovative concept
To start the visit well, it is necessary to download the application to Wine in Paris which allows you to be guided through the museum by videos, tests and explanations.
After pushing open the doors of the museum - and downloaded the smartphone application —, the visitor moves through the five thematic rooms, each based on a meaning. You will be able to touch different soils to understand the impact they have on the wine, smell the main aromas of the wines, challenge your tongue to recognize tastes, listen to different sounds related to the world of wine and observe different labels and understand the wine colors to discover all the essential notions of wine.
You will understand that interactivity is in the spotlight in this sensory journey.
A formula of 2 h offers participants to create their own wine. In this Winemaking workshop, an oenologist accompanies you to create the wine that suits you best. You can choose the grape varieties, taste to improve your wine over time and even make your own label.
A magnificent decor
After 18 months of work, the 800 m² were sublimated by interior designer Elodie Tornare who played with the lights, the materials, volumes and sounds to create an intimate and accessible atmosphere far from traditional cellars and museums.
My experience
The concept really allows you to have fun while learning about wine and its design. Using the application avoids reading miles of off-putting text, as is often the case in museums, but you still have to have a smartphone and have a battery pack at the time of the visit to be able to discover this museum. The concepts covered for nearly an hour are affordable and the video explanations are accessible to everyone. The tasting was done with a person with a good mastery of the wines they offered for tasting, but on the world of wine in general with in-depth knowledge in the field.
The only small problem is in the application itself. The museum was recently opened and the app is not quite finalized. Some videos were in English and some pages were difficult to display, but the application will experience updates to improve ergonomics and correct a few small errors.
