The yellow wine is the most famous of the Jura wines, a real institution. Every year, a party is organized the first weekend of February. It honors this atypical wine with a golden color and aromas of nuts and spices.

A traditional elaboration

The yellow wine comes from the only Savagnin grape variety - white grape —. The wine is left to rest in an oak barrel of 228 liters during 6 years and 3 minimum month. As time go by, a veil of yeast forms above the wine - the white layer seen in the photo below —. This layer is very important in the production of yellow wine since it protects the wine from oxygen. This method makes it possible to produce a wine with an exceptional aging capacity..

The wine is then bottled in a bottle of 62 cl — no 75 cl - called carnation. This difference of 13 cl is not an eccentricity of the Jurassians. It corresponds to the part of the wine that has evaporated during the standing period in the oak barrel.. This part of the wine evaporated is called "the part of the angels" - this corresponds to the space without wine in the photo above —. By piercing the veil after 6 years and 3 months, the wine is ready to be tasted and to offer all its character.

The breakthrough of yellow wine called into question for 2017

The year, the 20th edition of the Yellow wine breakthrough will take place in Lons-le-Saunier during the weekend of 6 to 7 February. By going there, you will be able to discover the last vintage - this is the moment when I see if you follow —, that is to say that of 2009.

It has been several months since we heard about the possible questioning of the Fête de la Percée du Vin Jaune as we know it today.. The Board of Directors formalized on Monday 18 of January 2016 the cancellation of the edition of 2017. The breakthrough of 2018 is for the moment maintained at the Star and the question of a return to an annual or biennial party remains unanswered.

Time for reflection

The interprofession and the organizing committee wish to reflect in order to enhance this celebration. According to the press release, "It must keep a logistical organization, financial and irreproachable security, embody an essential moment for winegrowers, and offer a satisfactory program to visitors ”.

Since 20 years, the Board of Directors has not seen many new faces. The direct consequence is that the concept has not changed during this whole period. New ideas must therefore be brought in during this break year to reinvent this emblematic Jura festival..

Every year, the winegrowers themselves organize this event with the support of nearly 700 volunteers. The Percée du vin jaune is a festival that has become a must for the region as it attracts more than 40’000 visitors to the region for a weekend. Last year, a journalist from Rue89 described this celebration as a " binge drinking ". This sentence certainly played an important role in calling into question the edition of 2017.

"Looks like here, we don't taste a lot. Second cellar, bawdy songs ("Naked ! ") and other jostling. The crowd staggers, rote, farts, heckling, create, get drunk. Long live the breakthrough ! Blurp. " The "breakthrough of yellow wine" in the Jura : an uninteresting drinking bout

A risky break

For the creator of the event, Bernard Badoz, this decision is worrying since a year's break also means a break with the various partners that will have to be won back the following year. The second danger of this break is the risk that it will become just a simple break., causing its end before the hour 2018. Although the harvests are less and more important, this break also means a significant loss of turnover for the winegrowers - and the economy in general - from the region for 2017.
